Form 3800: How Business Credits Are Combined

Published November 5, 2026

Form 3800 is the General Business Credit form. Many business credits are first figured on their own forms, such as Form 8846 or Form 8941. Form 3800 then combines them and applies your limit on credits. This page covers tax year 2025, using the 2025 instructions. IRS: Form 3800 (2025)

Who must file

The instructions say you must file Form 3800 and the credit source forms to claim any general business credit. Each credit form gives you a figure, and Form 3800 brings those figures together. IRS: Instructions for Form 3800 (2025), Who Must File

Partnerships and S corporations must complete the source credit form. Other filers complete the source form too, unless their only source of a credit is a partnership, S corporation, estate, trust, or cooperative. Those filers report that credit directly on Form 3800. The instructions list other exceptions, such as the investment credit on Form 3468. IRS: Instructions for Form 3800 (2025), General Instructions

The parts of the form

  • Part I: Credits that are not allowed against the tentative minimum tax.
  • Part II: Credits figured after the limits. The instructions call this section figuring the credit allowed after limitations.
  • Part III: Current-year general business credits, with a line for each credit type.
  • Part IV: Carryforwards from earlier years.
  • Part V: A breakdown of amounts for some entities and facilities.

Not every filer needs every part. Start with the credit forms you have, then read the instructions for the parts they point to. IRS: Form 3800 (2025)

What happens to credits you cannot use

If your credit is more than your tax liability allows, the unused credit can be carried back or forward. The instructions say that in general, unused general business credits may be carried back 1 year and carried forward 20 years. To carry back a credit, you file an amended return for the prior year. You can also file an application for tentative refund, such as Form 1045 for individuals or Form 1139 for corporations. The instructions say the tentative refund application must be filed by the end of the tax year after the year the credit arose. IRS: Instructions for Form 3800 (2025), Carryback and Carryforward

Pre-filing registration

Some clean energy credits need a pre-filing registration number before you claim them or elect to transfer them. The instructions say a registration number is valid only for the year it was obtained. If you are claiming only the credits covered in this article, check the source form before you assume registration applies. IRS: Instructions for Form 3800 (2025), pre-filing registration

Examples of credits that flow here

Two credits covered in our posts follow this route. Form 8846 reports the employer tip credit on Form 3800, Part III, line 4f, for most filers. Form 8941 is claimed as part of the general business credit on Form 3800. IRS: Form 8846 (2025); IRS: Instructions for Form 8941 (2025)

Steps to follow

  1. List each business credit you have for the year and the form it uses.
  2. Complete each source form first.
  3. Carry the results to Form 3800 and complete the lines it asks for.
  4. Attach Form 3800 and any schedule it calls for, then file your return.

Common mix-ups

  • A credit you cannot use this year is not always lost. Unused credits can be carried back or forward under the rules above.
  • The carryback rule has a limit. In general, an unused credit cannot be carried back to a year before the first year the credit was allowed. IRS: Instructions for Form 3800 (2025), carryback and carryforward
  • Form 3800 is the place where the limit is applied. Each source form still needs its own completed figures.

Read Form 8846 and Form 8941 for the two credits above. Read Schedule 3 to see where other credits go on your Form 1040.
